Remote Work Skills & Tools

Remote team meetings are a big part of remote team and individual productivity. Whether you are an individual contributor or a meeting leader - getting them right and making sure they are as effective as possible is important and we all have a part to play.

Having the skills to lead or contribute effectively in a remote team meeting will positively differentiate you as a candidate. As Gartner says here, ““Working remotely tends to expose in-person practices that are already problematic” and meetings are one of those things!

Here is a great article from “Harvard Business Review” that dives into “some steps you can take to improve how you make your virtual interactions more meaningful and engaging” 👇

Before we spotlight the framework - please do consider what Gartner say “Consider if you even need a meeting. Even in real life (IRL), I have never heard a client lament, “I just wish I had more meetings.” The opposite is almost always true — many people find that group meetings, whether remote or in person, interfere with their real work, are boring and unproductive, and are too numerous.”

So if a remote hiring manager asks you how you would run or contribute to an effective remote team meeting here is a 7 step framework that can help you 👇

1) Define the agenda
2) Check your technology
3) Show your human side
4) Establish a protocol for all speakers in the meeting
5) Structure your thoughts
6) Share next steps
7) Practice self-reflection

The Impact of Remote

This year’s International Women’s Day carries the theme #AccelerateAction, emphasising the urgency of taking decisive steps toward gender equality. At Grow Remote, we believe remote employment is a game-changer in achieving this goal.

But let’s look at the data first because it shows us just how remote and hybrid employment is a game-changer in achieving gender equality in the workplace. The CSO Women and Men in Ireland Hub states that:

  • The number of women working from home in Ireland rose by 306% between 2016 and 2022.

  • In contrast, the number of men working from home increased by 114% during the same period.

  • Some regions saw a 657% surge in female remote work participation signaling that flexible work is a crucial driver of employment, particularly for women.

From the Silicone Republic article here, Laura Ryan, the director of international human resources at Dropbox, believes remote working has opened up the opportunity for women “to better balance work and home, without sacrificing on climbing the ladder”.

“Without the stress of a hectic commute, or the pressure to be physically present in the office, it’s now easier to find a better balance with work. While these benefits are true regardless of gender, data suggests that they are valued higher amongst women,” she said.

The State of Remote IE

At the start of March 2025 the number of remote job in Ireland as per listings on LinkedIn looked like this 👇

16% of jobs listed are remote - that is a very stable Q1 with no decline in sight!

Reminder - companies that hire remotely do not usually advertise in traditional space or places and that’s why jobs boards that are dedicated to remote or places like LinkedIn who pick up remote jobs directly from employers remote job posts are a good indicator for the state of remote jobs available in Ireland.

If you liked all of that you might like to know a little bit more about us?
